Interview: Degrassi Star Ana Golja
Actress Ana Golja - best known for her role on Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi: Next Class - is now adding recording artist to her impressive resumé. Under her first name, Muazana, she will release her debut album, Epilogue, on January 26, 2018.
Fans have been getting a taste of Muazana's new music as select songs from the album have been released digitally in October, November and December.
"I wanted to merge jazz and soul with mainstream pop music and even some slightly urban music to make my own sound," Muazana says.
I had the pleasure of chatting with Muazana about the new album and what we can look forward to in 2018. See the interview below!
You’ve been releasing new music! Tell us a bit about the process of working on this EP and what fans can expect from this new project.
This process has been a very long but rewarding one. I wrote the EP over the course of about 4 years, during a period of great growth as an emotionally intelligent human being. I got inspiration for the songs not only from my personal experiences but also things my friends were going through, as well as what’s happening in the world generally. It has truly been a labour of love. I felt so bad for teasing the fans for so long over the past few years but I wanted to make sure my music was 100% authentic to who I am. You can only make a first impression once so I wanted to really put my best foot forward. Now it’s finally out and in the open! Such a terrifying but again, rewarding and beautiful thing.
You’ve had the chance to play some incredible characters over the years, which has been your favourite and why?
I really did! So blessed to have played such great characters. I think my favourite is a tie between Zoe in Degrassi and Ariana Berlin in Full Out. Both characters went through so much and truly overcame the obstacles they were faced with — I love a strong female character. Both were courageous characters that inspired youth around the globe.
Being a public figure, you get the chance to meet so many different people and fans around the world. What has been your most humbling experience so far?
I think my most humbling experience was the reaction to my sexual assault episode on Degrassi. I had fans from all over the world reach out to me and tell me about their personal experiences, how my character gave them the courage to speak out, and inspired them. It was totally surreal and really made me realize how influential the show was and in turn, my character was.
If you could collaborate with any artist musically, who would it be and why?
If I could collaborate with any artist, it would be Sam Smith. I absolutely adore him, his voice, and his songs. A true artist. I feel like our creative visions/sound align well and we’d have amazing harmonies together!
Even with your busy schedule, you still find time to give back to the community. Talk to us about a few organizations you work with and what they mean to you.
One organization that I’ve been working closely with over the past few years is WE. Giving back to communities locally and internationally as well as inspiring youth around the world are things that are very important to me. I’ve gone on multiple trips with the organization and have seen first hand, what a huge impact people can make.
